If I hadn't read that on the cover flap, I would not even think they were by the same author. So, this is Ken Kesey's second novel, after One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. His eldest son, Hank, gets his half-brother Leland to come back from the east coast to join them, despite Lee being weaker and more bookish than the rest of the Stamper clan. When Henry Stamper, the patriarch of the Stamper family, is injured, another Stamper needs to be brought in to get the logs in on time. As a result, the town turns against them, but the Stampers stand strong, even as members of their own family succumb to the pressures of an entire small town hating them. When the union loggers in town go on strike, the non-union Stampers keep on logging and providing the regional mill with the lumber the town would have given them, and make the strike ineffective. Summary: The Stampers are a stubborn logging family in the fictional town of Wakonda, Oregon. It's different, it's confusing, but my god did I love it. Early warning: This book is not for everyone.
